AMETEK, Inc. is a global manufacturer of electronic instruments and electromechanical devices with annual sales of $3.3 billion. As a major motor supplier to industrial and commercial vacuum cleaner manufacturers, APC was contacted to develop a vacuum motor exhaust filter.
The purpose of this filter is to capture any migration of microscopic particles that may pass through pre-filters consisting of paper and cloth vacuum bag filters. In addition, this filter had to capture carbon dust emissions generated by vacuum motor brushes and incorporate foam sound suppression filters.
APC engineering designed several filter concepts for approval of a new patented filter design.
Traditional HEPA filter media with a minimum filter efficiency of 99.97% @ 0.3 micron was required however standard glass fiber HEPA media was too restrictive to airflow resulting in a higher pressure drop across the filter, lower vacuum suction and higher motor operating temperatures. APC selected a high loft synthetic HEPA media capable of providing 99.97% @ 0.3 micron along with a post foam filter sound suppression wrap designed to fit flush within the top and bottom caps.
APC engineering also designed interchangeable top end cap features to accommodate different motor mount configurations. In addition, filter change out downtime was reduced significantly with these modifications.
