Airborne bacteria are a serious concern for food processors. For open plant applications, outdoor air can carry between 200 and 1500 bacteria per m³. That means an enormous amount of bacteria passing through your air handling system every hour. For example, an air handling unit of 10,000 m3/h could receive up to 15 million bacteria every hour. Roof top mounted HVAC systems require proper filter design that may include a pre-filter bank for course dust contaminates followed by higher filtration or HEPA filtration. Maintenance of these systems is essential for open plant air processing.
In a closed system, food and/or beverage products are processed or dispensed within a closed work cell. Air temperature, humidity and the level of air filtration is controlled through a series of HEPA filters.
