An OEM of industrial vacuum cleaners contacted APC regarding problems encountered with cylindrical filters that frequently plugged up in heavy dust loading conditions, resulting in a loss of vacuum suction. Frequent filter cleaning was required and on-site filter changing took significantly longer than anticipated, resulting in work downtime.

APC designed and engineered several filter concepts for approval of a new patented filter design.

APC performed a comprehensive analysis of all dust types the filters would be subjected to. Many dust types were submicron, hydroscopic and varied in shape. APC determined a HEPA filter with a minimum filter efficiency of 99.97% @ 0.3 micron was required however standard glass fiber HEPA media was too fragile to handle abrasive dusts and the vacuum’s built in reverse air cleaning. APC selected a PTFE membrane capable of providing 99.97% @ 0.3 micron along with a pleatable substrate filter media to laminate the PTFE membrane to. This filter media combination provided durability to handle abrasive dusts and continuous self cleaning.

APC also replaced the existing cylindrical filter to a conical design that increased dust removal from 35% to 100%. To reduce filter change out downtime, APC designed a threaded spin on top cap for fast and easy filter installation and removal.

APC’s new filter design proved to be a flagship feature in every model of their industrial vacuums today.
