Preparing Your Home For Summer

With summer fast approaching, people are getting their house in order now to impress their guests come. Many wish to minimize the dust and debris that has accumulated throughout the Winter, leaving a fresher, cleaner, and healthier home.

  1. Preparing Home For Summer

When it comes to spring cleaning, changing the air filters in your home is often overlooked, even though it’s such an important task.

Ventilation is particularly poor in the Winter months, and failing to service and clean your HVAC system and replace your filter means that are you are essentially circulating dust and dirt back into your home.

This can affect the air quality of your home and lead to sickness. If you have allergy sufferers in your home, allergens are being circulated back into the air as well.

If this wasn’t enough of a reason to clean your HVAC system and replace your air filter, failing to change your air filter regularly can also decrease its efficiency and shorten its lifespan.

  2. Invest In HEPA Air Filters

As we said before, when it comes to filters, not all are created equal. If you want to achieve optimal levels of filtration in your home, you need to invest in true HEPA filters.

All filters have a MERV rating, which essentially tells you how efficient your filter is at filtering out small particles. HEPA filters have the highest MERV ratings, which means that they won’t only minimize dust but also improve air quality as well.

  3. Dust/Wash Fans, Vents, Baseboards and Walls

Another often overlooked task when it comes to spring cleaning is dusting your fans and vents. Again, both of these will likely have a layer of dust and debris on them and can aggravate allergies.

To do this, you can use a combination of a wet cloth and a vacuum with a hose attachment.

The next step is to remove the layer of dust that has accumulated on your baseboards and walls.
For the walls, you can begin dusting by placing a towel over a broom, moving from top to bottom. With warm, soapy water and a lint-free cloth, you can then begin scrubbing your walls.

Next, repeat this same procedure but with water only. Lastly, open up all of your windows to allow the walls to dry.
