Cleanup Post Basement Flood

If you have a flooded basement, the obvious first step is to stop the source of water (if possible) and then have a professional pump out the remaining water with a sump pump. And, of course, it’s important to act quickly.

Once this has been taken care of, you are left with a lot of cleanup. Here’s how to handle cleanup after a basement flood.

  1. Drying the Basement

Once the water is pumped out of your basement, the next step is to dry the basement. If your basement has carpets, towels can be used to soak up as much water as possible before you remove the carpet.

Any furniture that has gotten wet should also be removed, as well as anything in your basement that’s made out of a porous organic substance such as cardboard, as mold can easily grow on these types of substances.

  2. Increase Air Circulation & Ventilation

Once the water has been pumped out of your basement, it’s important to increase air circulation and ventilation as much as possible, in order to minimize excess moisture in the air and the possibility of mold growth.

If your basement has windows, open them. Keep in mind that sunlight is another natural enemy of mold. If not, you may want to set up several fans. Running any dehumidifiers is also a good idea.

  3. Turn On Your Heating System

If your heating system has not been affected by water, it is also a good idea to turn it on (or to turn it up to a higher setting). This will help your basement to dry more quickly.

Keep in mind, however, that you need to ensure your windows are open to allow moisture to escape.

  4. Get A HEPA Air Filter

If your basement has flooded, chances are high that you are dealing with at least some level of mold/mildew in your basement.

All filters are assigned a MERV rating (Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), a value between 1 and 20. Filters with a higher MERV rating are better at filtering small particles from the air.

HEPA filters have a very high MERV rating, which makes them great for removing mold, viruses, and any other type of small particles.
