If you want to make the most out of your air purification system and achieve the highest quality of air, air filters must be a continuous fixture both in the workplace and at home. Here’s how to get the most out of them.
- Choose a Filter with a High MERV Rating
All filters are assigned a MERV rating, which stands for Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value.
In short, this rating tells you how efficient the filter is at filtering out small particles. Filters are assigned a number between 1-20, with a higher MERV rating meaning that the filter is capable of trapping more small particles.
A MERV rating between 1-4, for example, will minimize dust but will not necessarily improve air quality.
In contrast, a filter with a MERV rating of between 13-16 is usually used in medical settings because it provides a very high level of filtration.
You may not need this level of filtration in a home, but you may need to choose a filter with more than the basic rating of 1-4.
Our previous blog post discusses how to choose a filter based on its MERV rating.
- Change Your Filters Regularly (Or Wash Them)
It’s also important to change the filters in your air purification system regularly. As for the length of time, it depends on the particular setting they’re being used in.
Most manufacturers recommend that filters should be changed every 3 months, but this time can be much shorter in certain industries and conditions.
The point is that if you’re leaving a lot of time between changing them, you are essentially reintroducing all of those particles back into the air again.
Alternatively, if you have air filters that are reusable, it’s important that they are cleaned regularly.
- Ensure You’re Using a True HEPA Filter
For those who use HEPA filters, it’s important to make sure that you are using a true HEPA filter. There are a lot of filters on the market that claim to be HEPA filters, but the reality is that if it’s not a true HEPA filter, it won’t have the the same filtering capabilities.
In order to qualify as a true HEPA filter, the filter must be capable of filtering 99.97% of particles that are as small as 0.3 microns.
