Clean benches provide filtered air across a work surface in laboratories to protect samples from contamination. They are used in a variety of laboratories, including medicine, research, manufacturing, pharmaceutical manufacturing, food processing, and more. Their broad spectrum of uses means that each clean bench and industry has their own custom needs, processes, and equipment. This ensures that no matter what sample is being used, they can stay uncontaminated!

Clean benches use a laminar flow to avoid contamination of samples. They are recommended for work with non-hazardous materials where clean, particle-free air is necessary to keep materials free of contamination. The laminar flow ensures the work surface is constantly flooded with filtered air to remove particles from the air surrounding the samples.

They differ from biological safety cabinets in that they do not provide the personnel or surrounding environment protection from any air particles created by the samples or aerosols created on the work surface. That’s why clean benches are used for non-hazardous materials only.

In order for the clean benches to properly utilize a laminar flow and protect the samples from contamination, a HEPA filter or carbon filter are typically used. These critical air filters are key for ensuring a clean bench works as it should and industry standards can be followed.

Air Filters for Clean Benches

HEPA filters remove a minimum of 99.97% of particles that pass through the filter at 0.3 microns. Particles of this size are the Most Penetrating Particle Size and are the most difficult to filter. HEPA filter media’s include sub-micron, wet laid glass and/or meltblown polypropylene electrostatically charged fibers arranged in non-woven format to capture fine particles. For clean benches utilized in food processing, research, and technology, these air filters are key for ensuring the samples stay uncontaminated while they’re being examined or processed. These are often used with a pre-filter for maximum efficiency.

Another level of filtration that some clean benches and equipment may use is a carbon filter. Carbon filters using activated charcoal are some of the most common filtration materials used. Carbon filters are used to remove odours and gases from the air. They can be used as a pre-filter in combination with HEPA filters or other filter types to ensure the air around the sample in the laminar flow is uncontaminated.

HEPA filters and carbon filters for clean benches are among the standard filters manufactured for this purpose. However, in some cases, other filtration solutions will be required or custom filters created for customized clean bench equipment.

Laminar flow cabinets are used in a variety of environments, particularly where a clean air environment is required for smaller items or samples. They are a key part of any laboratory and a requirement for keeping samples free of contaminants that could damage them.

Laminar flow hoods work to protect the working environment from dust and other airborne contaminants by maintaining a consistent, constant, unidirectional flow of filtered air over the work area. The flow can either be horizontal or vertical, depending on the lab’s needs.

There are three classes of laminar flow hoods, Class I, II, and III. Each of these are suitable for working with different types of materials as each has its own level of protection and filtration. Class I is suitable for laboratory personnel with similar air flow characteristics to chemical fume hoods. Class II are designed for work involving BSL-1, 2, and 3 materials and provide an aseptic environment for cell culture experiments. Class III biosafety cabinets provide the highest attainable level of protection to personnel and the environment and are suitable for human pathogens and BSL-4 materials.

Laminar Flow Cabinets Filtration

Laminar flow hoods create this unidirectional flow of air with one or more HEPA filters and pre-filters. This set up id designed to create a particle-free working environment and provide product protection from contamination. Air is taken through this HEPA filtration system and exhausted across the work surface as part of the laminar flow process.

Because a laminar flow cabinet is enclosed on the sides, a constant positive air pressure can be maintained to prevent the intrusion of contaminated room air and personnel contamination. Often, laminar hoods will require custom HEPA filters to be created to ensure they create the right pressure drop and fit the equipment perfectly to prevent leaks. Specifications

First, we met with the client to determine their exact needs and required specifications. This RFQ step is paramount to the success of the project as this is where we gather all details about the requirement, expectations of the air filter and timeline of the filter project. In this first step, we determine exactly what type of filter is required and the process needed to create it.

3D Designs

Next, we create a filter design using SolidWorks and employ 3D modeling and if necessary fluid dynamic simulations to understand airflow into the filter and particle capture. Using software is key to ensuring that when the physical filter is created, it fits correctly into the housing and provides the correct filtration efficiency and pressure drop.

Rapid Prototyping

Our unique rapid prototyping sets us apart from other air filter manufacturers.  We have created fully functional prototypes in as little as seven days for clients with a short timeline. This helps clients expedite equipment compliance testing and allows us to provide faster mass production. Employing rapid prototyping ensures that a production process does not get stuck waiting for the air filter to be completed, and other testing and development can be completed quickly for the end-product.

Testing

We test prototype filters in our state-of-the-art ISO 6 Clean Room test lab to analyze filter performance capabilities. This provides a consistent temperature and humidity environment to reduce filter failure rates and reduces manufacturing rejection costs. Feedback

HEPA Filters

Types Of Air Filters

  1. HEPA Filters
    HEPA (high efficiency particulate air) filters are among the most popular and well-known filters on the market today. HEPA filters eliminate 99.97% of contaminants in the air that are the size of 0.3 microns in size, which means that this technology is extremely effective at sanitizing the air. HEPA filters are found in a wide-range of industries, from residential properties to businesses to medical facilities and more. For the most part, HEPA filters are made up of fiberglass fiber mats, which are designed to collect particles as air flows through.
  2. Carbon Air Filters
    Carbon air filters make use of activated carbon to neutralize and/or absorb elements such as chemicals and gases. The filter serves to neutralize the chemicals and gases as they travel through the air filter – but carbon can also be enhanced in such a way that it actually absorbs these chemical compounds as well. Carbon air filters are ideal at removing cigarette smoke, and are suited to industries where chemicals are a concern.
  3. Ionic Air Filters
    Ionic air filters produce negatively charged ions as a means to attract particles that are present in the air. As these two entities come into contact, they are deionized and filtered out of the air. These filters, which are also called air ionizers, are common in commercial sectors.
  4. UV Light Air Filters
    The last type of commonly used filter is the UV light air filter. Harmful particles such as mold and bacteria are neutralized through the process of titanium dioxide being exposed to UV light. High intensity UV is capable of destroying the majority of carbon-based compounds, which means that these filters are commonly used in medical facilities alongside HEPA filters.

Increased demand for tighter ISO controls in high purity and critical air filter production also requires filter tests labs to be climate controlled to ensure temperature and humidity is consistent during filter testing operations. Critical air filters, including HEPA and ULPA filters are susceptible to failure if environmental conditions during filter media storage, pleating, assembly and testing operations are not consistent. Manufacturing within ISO 9001:2015 in addition to filter testing within an ISO 6 Clean Room will reduce filter failure rates significantly. In addition, manufacturing cost will be reduced as scrap rates decline. Our filter testing equipment was moved into this clean room on October 5th, 2018.
