VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are a specific type of organic compound that can lead to mild or severe health problems in humans. VOCs are very common indoors, in workplaces, houses, and schools. Many industries, such as photography, chemical manufacturing, dry cleaning, copying or printing, and work with petroleum-based products, have regular high exposure to VOCs.
In these work environments, proper air filtration is required to ensure the safety of the employees. Regular air filters won’t do the trick. You need activated carbon air filters – a filtration system specifically for filtering VOCs.
What are VOCs?
VOCs are organic compounds that easily become gases or vapors and usually have an extremely low boiling point. They are carbon compounds that contain elements such as hydrogen, oxygen, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, sulfur, or nitrogen.
We encounter VOCs every day from a variety of sources. Examples of VOCs are gasoline, benzene, formaldehyde, toluene, xylene, styrene, and perchloroethylene or tetrachloroethylene. We encounter these in gasoline, paint thinners, air fresheners, insect repellants, wood preservatives, aerosol sprays, cosmetics, and dry cleaning fluid, to name a few examples.
VOCs can have extremely negative health effects on humans. It depends on the VOC, length of exposure, and level of exposure in each individual. Many of the VOCs named above are classified as human carcinogens or likely carcinogens. In less severe cases, VOCs can lead to a variety of skin or eye irritation, dizziness, and nausea. It’s imperative that these VOCs be removed from the air to prevent your employees from getting sick.
Activated Carbon Air Filters for VOCs
For filtering VOCs from the air, you need an activated carbon filter. APC manufactures custom Granular Activated Carbon (GAC) filters for this purpose. This type of filter will remove odors and absorb dangerous gases and VOCs to keep those in the work environment safe.
GAC filters can also be customized with other filter types, like HEPA and ULPA to ensure the removal of particles and bacteria. Whatever particles, gases, and compounds you want removed from your work environment, APC can find a filtration solution. We’ve put these filters to use in a variety of applications, including in firefighting tractors which operate in extreme conditions and are the only line of defense for the operators.
