Airborne pathogens

Airborne microbes and pathogens can have negative health effects on people and animals. Contaminated air can deposit viruses and bacteria in your eyes and respirator system where they can multiply, enter your blood stream, and make you ill. Every year, tens of thousands of people in North America become sick from airborne microbes; some of them fatally so.

For humans, these microbes can range from the common cold to the influenza virus to Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS). The SARS virus is especially deadly, having killed almost 1 in 10 people who contracted it during its initial major outbreak in China in 2002-2003.

Like other swine industry facilities, our client faced the challenge of the porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome (PRRS) virus. This viral disease affects the respiratory systems of pigs of any age. It also causes reproductive impairment among breeding age livestock. There is no definitive treatment for the PRRS.

Not since the eradication of swine fever has a viral disease had as significant impact on the swine industry. Estimates put the impact of the virus at over $580 million per year in the United States alone.

Our swine industry client approached us in an effort to stop the spread of the disease within and between its farms. PRRS microbes can become airborne, travelling up to 2 miles (3km) between farms.

APC engineers examined and analyzed the ventilation systems in our client’s swine facilities. In order to stop the spread of the virus, APC developed a custom 4V filter using a specially treated antimicrobial filter media. This filtration system dramatically reduced the airborne spread of the PRRS virus between and within the farming facilities.

In addition to meeting the filtration requirements necessary to keep the livestock safe, APC also designed the filter with a MERV 8 pre-filter and a V-shaped filter design. These design elements prolonged the filter life and reduced system energy consumption.

Micro-Filtration vs. HEPA Filtration

What’s the best solution for your business or home?

We often receive questions about the difference between Micro-Filtration and HEPA filtration. As the industry’s leading supplier of Janitized® brand “commercial grade” vacuum cleaner filter bags, we have extensive experience on this subject.

It seems that many consumers believe these are similar technologies. While their ultimate function is similar – the collection of microscopic particles – the technology used is actually quite different.

Micro-Filtration

Micro – means “small” and used to indicate a smaller than average scale (microscopic scale), as opposed to prefixes like mega and macro, used to indicate a larger than average scale. Specific to vacuum cleaner filter bags, microfiltration is specific to the filtration level or filter efficiency of the filter bag.

Standard vacuum filter bags are made using a 1 ply outer layer of cellulose filter media, Micro-Filtration filter bags incorporate an additional 2nd ply layer typically comprised of a polypropylene melt-blown filter media. Janitized Vacuum Microfilter BagThis additional 2nd ply increases the filter efficiency, reducing the amount of micro particulates being blown through the filter bag and exhaust air into your office or home. Traditional 1 ply or lower quality filter bags pick up and trap large pieces of dirt and debris, but cannot stop fine dust molecules or allergens from being released into the air. Micro-Filtration filter bags vary in filter efficiency and may have more than 2 ply’s.

A 2009 study by the University of Virginia Asthma and Allergic Diseases Center, entitled “Micro-Filtration Vacuum Bags May Ease Allergies” found that microfiltration bags can have a positive effect on reducing allergens in the air. These findings pointed to the positive effect on removing cat dander, one of the most common, and aggravating, sources of allergy suffering. ASTM standards provide consumers with confidence in the things they buy and use, including vacuum cleaner bags.

Because single layer vacuum cleaner filter bags do not trap allergens and small particles, vacuums can actually reintroduce these particulates back into the breathing zone in your office or home. A vacuum fitted with a Micro-Filtration filter bag can significantly increase the filtration of submicron particles and improve indoor air quality.

HEPA Filters

HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filters provide much higher filter efficiencies vs Micro-Filtration filters. Glass fibers, typically used in HEPA media’s, are microscopic fiber diameters randomly layered and arranged. The spaces between the fibres are larger than the sub-micron particles they capture.

As air and debris pass through the filter, the glass fibres trap small particles in three ways. HEPA Filter Micro Fibers ImageSome particles catch the side of the fibres and stick to them – called “interception” – while others impact directly into the fibre, embedding themselves – called “impaction.” The third process is called “diffusion.” These particles collide with gases in the filter, causing them to slow down or stop, and then get caught up in the fibres.

Interestingly, HEPA filters become more efficient as they capture more particles. As particles build up on the fibres, their electrostatic charge becomes stronger, improving their ability to attract particles.

Micro-Filtration vs. HEPA Filtration – Which is the best investment?

There is no simple answer to this question as each end use varies. For example, contract cleaners, hotel & hospital operations, and government buildings have fixed cleaning budgets. The replacement cost of filter bags vs HEPA filters needs to be carefully examined to determine total appliance maintenance costs. Often forgotten is the cost of lost productivity due to sick leave, which could be a result of reintroducing allergens into the working environment. This should be factored into this equation.

Other factors include the quality build of the vacuum cleaner. Commercial vacuum cleaners are typically better constructed for more abuse vs household vacuums.

Ultimately, it depends on what trade offs you are willing to sacrifice for high air purity.

Infectious Disease: What you need to know!

Infectious disease is all around us making news headlines daily:

Ebola is a major news story right now. Horrifying images from Western Africa are appearing on our televisions and in our news feeds, and many people fear the disease will spread to our shores.

While Ebola is a terrible disease, it is fortunately not airborne. “There is no evidence that Ebola is spread by coughing or sneezing,” according to the United States Center for Disease Control. “Ebola is transmitted through direct contact with the blood or body fluids of a person who is sick with Ebola. The virus is not air borne or transmitted through the air like the measles virus.”

So, we can all let out a sigh of relief on that one, as airborne Ebola is an intensely frightening prospect.

This doesn’t mean, however, that we’re totally in the clear. There are still a number of airborne infectious diseases floating around our offices, homes, and recreational areas. Influenza, the ‘flu,’ remains one of the most deadly viruses in North America and is one we should all take steps to protect ourselves against. We’re deep into flu season now, so how can you protect yourself against airborne infectious diseases and viruses like the flu?

First, we need to understand how airborne infections are spread. According to Maine’s Division of Infectious Disease,

Airborne diseases are caused by pathogenic microbes small enough to be discharged from an infected person via coughing, sneezing, laughing and close personal contact or aerosolization of the microbe. The discharged microbes remain suspended in the air on dust particles, respiratory and water droplets. Illness is caused when the microbe is inhaled or contacts mucus membranes or when secretions remaining on a surface are touched.

Protecting yourself and those around you from airborne infections begins with keeping the air in your environment clean and as pathogen free as possible.

A simple step to reduce the transmission of airborne diseases is practicing proper social and respiratory etiquette. Staying home when ill, keeping close contact with an ill person to a minimum, allowing a few feet distance from others while ill, wearing a mask, and covering coughs and sneezes with elbow or tissue can greatly reduce transmission.

Good hand washing techniques are also a must. Keeping your hands clean can decrease the spread of germ-containing droplets that could be picked up on hands from surfaces or hand contact with secretions.

Environmental controls and engineering alternatives can also help reduce transmission of water droplet aerosolized pathogens. A HEPA filter or other air filter can pull the harmful pathogens out of the air and help keep the air in your home, work, medical facility, or public spaces cleaner and less likely to carry infections.

HEPA Filter Rapid Prototypes

Rapid prototyping is vital to the successful creation and implementation of custom HEPA filters. Through this process, you can test your custom filters in the field or the production line before committing to mass production.

Our design team begins the HEPA filter rapid prototyping process by developing an exact design based upon your specifications. Once the design is complete, we create CAD drawings of the filter in SolidWorks. CAD files are then programmed into a 3D printer, which produces the body or frame for the prototype filter.

Client Case Study: Prototyping for the Transit Industry

A manufacturer of Tier 1 batteries contacted APC to design high performance air intake and exhaust filters for a roof-top mounted battery pack for Hybrid transit buses. The manufacturer had specific environmental conditions the filter must perform in addition to meeting pressure drop, level of filtration and filter life expectations. They also needed prototype filters in two weeks!

APC received a retainer from the prospective client to cover R&D and filter testing costs – with remaining funds put towards eventual filter production. APC’s engineering team had two prototypes ready for client testing within seven days.

Three months later after initial client testing and feedback, our engineering team fine-tuned the filters and created a third filter for further testing. APC produced 20 prototype filters to be tested in a fleet of buses in New York City, Arizona, and California with different altitudes, road elevations, air temperatures, pollution levels, etc… Over the course of six months our client was able to see how they held up in real world situations across a diverse range of climates and environmental conditions.

Box Style HEPA Filters

Box style HEPA filters, as they are commonly referred to, are used in a number of diverse industries and applications to provide the highest level of air contamination control and prevention of airborne bacteria and viral organisms.

Primary industry applications that require the use of Box style HEPA filters included asbestos abatement, electronics, food processing, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical processing to name just a few.

HEPA filters are designed to capture submicron particles to meet minimum filtration efficiency (FE) rating of 99.97% down to 0.3 microns size. To understand how small a 0.3 micron size particle is, this chart will provide you some perspective.

  • 0.1 to 0.3 micron = Atmospheric dusts, fumes and various allergens
  • 0.3 to 1 micron = Tobacco smoke, metallic fumes and bacteria such as staphylococcus
  • 1 to 5 micron = Fly ash, coal dust, paint pigments, insecticide dusts
  • 5 to 10 micron = Cement dust, mold, pollen, medium dust particles
  • > 10 micron = Plant spores, pollens, milled flour

In North America, the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Technology provides standards for HEPA filter testing and filter certification. Each filter is tested and if it passes, a certification label is applied identifying filter part number, airflow rating, pressure drop, FE and other trackable information as illustrated here.

Custom Air Filter Projects for Diverse Industries

Our client is a major HVAC systems supplier to Bobcat, Caterpillar, Hitachi, John Deer, Komatsu and Volvo. The function of this system is to filter outside air before it enters the operator’s cabin. The filter is designed to filter outside air and re-circulated air based on a 60/40 split of outside to inside air.
