Rapid prototyping is vital to the successful creation and implementation of custom HEPA filters. Through this process, you can test your custom filters in the field or the production line before committing to mass production.

Our design team begins the HEPA filter rapid prototyping process by developing an exact design based upon your specifications. Once the design is complete, we create CAD drawings of the filter in SolidWorks. CAD files are then programmed into a 3D printer, which produces the body or frame for the prototype filter.

The rapid prototyping process offers your company numerous advantages. It is a fast and economical way to create production-quality parts before investing in molds, machinery, or complex production processes for mass production. We can create a single or small number of custom air filter prototypes for testing and equipment and/or appliance performance evaluation.

As a manufacturer of equipment and/or appliances, you can test the prototype filter in real-world situations, at various temperature levels, with different airborne contaminants and other relevant conditions.

Client Case Study: Prototyping for the Transit Industry

A manufacturer of Tier 1 batteries contacted APC to design high performance air intake and exhaust filters for a roof-top mounted battery pack for Hybrid transit buses. The manufacturer had specific environmental conditions the filter must perform in addition to meeting pressure drop, level of filtration and filter life expectations. They also needed prototype filters in two weeks!

APC received a retainer from the prospective client to cover R&D and filter testing costs – with remaining funds put towards eventual filter production. APC’s engineering team had two prototypes ready for client testing within seven days.

Three months later after initial client testing and feedback, our engineering team fine-tuned the filters and created a third filter for further testing. APC produced 20 prototype filters to be tested in a fleet of buses in New York City, Arizona, and California with different altitudes, road elevations, air temperatures, pollution levels, etc… Over the course of six months our client was able to see how they held up in real world situations across a diverse range of climates and environmental conditions.

Box Style HEPA Filters

Box style HEPA filters, as they are commonly referred to, are used in a number of diverse industries and applications to provide the highest level of air contamination control and prevention of airborne bacteria and viral organisms.

Box Style HEPA Filters

Primary industry applications that require the use of Box style HEPA filters included asbestos abatement, electronics, food processing, hospitals, laboratories, and pharmaceutical processing to name just a few.

HEPA filters are designed to capture submicron particles to meet minimum filtration efficiency (FE) rating of 99.97% down to 0.3 microns size. To understand how small a 0.3 micron size particle is, this chart will provide you some perspective.

  • 0.1 to 0.3 micron = Atmospheric dusts, fumes and various allergens
  • 0.3 to 1 micron = Tobacco smoke, metallic fumes and bacteria such as staphylococcus
  • 1 to 5 micron = Fly ash, coal dust, paint pigments, insecticide dusts
  • 5 to 10 micron = Cement dust, mold, pollen, medium dust particles
  • > 10 micron = Plant spores, pollens, milled flour

In North America, the Institute of Environmental Sciences & Technology provides standards for HEPA filter testing and filter certification. Each filter is tested and if it passes, a certification label is applied identifying filter part number, airflow rating, pressure drop, FE and other trackable information as illustrated here.

The Industry’s First UL-Certified Compostable Replacement Filter Bag for Commercial Vacuum Cleaners

COM-PTMV-4(5)A few months ago, we discussed the process of obtaining UL/EcoLogo certification for our compostable vacuum cleaner filter bags. If you thought the year and a half process of filter media research and product testing was the biggest challenge, you’re wrong—the UL certification was. We’re thrilled to (finally) announce that we’ve just received the industry’s first UL certified compostable vacuum cleaner bag that meets Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Green Guidelines.

Compostable vacuum bags will be sold under the Janitized brand, a premium line of high filtration replacement vacuum bags, and other types of filters that meet or exceed OEM specifications. Janitized is at the forefront of the JAN/SAN commercial cleaning industry and we pay close attention to industry trends and what end users want and are looking for. Over the last 8 years the demand for “green” products has grown significantly. The conceptualization process for a biodegradable vacuum cleaner bag began in 2010, and from there we moved into product development, pilot-runs of raw materials, product manufacturing, product testing and onward toward the certification process.

A standard household vacuum cleaner picks up relatively smaller amounts of dust from hardwood floors including carpet fiber and debris however commercial vacuums pick up so much more. HEPA Filter requirements for Biosafe Engineering, Pathological & Medical Applications

The same focus on HEPA indoor air-quality applies to many other facilities and applications as categorized under the term biosafety.

Have you ever wondered what happens to human organs after they have been removed? In ancient times, Egyptians preserved human organs in canopic jars, but in modern times, it’s a little different. Today, these are considered major biohazards to public health therefore removed organs are placed into an incinerator and burned to ash killing all pathogens in the process.

Air Filtration Guidelines for Gun Ranges

Our last blog discussed the importance of air filtration in shooting range facilities, and we wanted to continue on with the topic to bring attention to another important point in that industry: government regulation.

While many facilities take advantage of how our products keep the breathing air safe, some might not realize the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has strict rules in place to protect the health of employees and facility patrons.

Just ask two workers at a gun range in Illinois, who “were exposed to airborne lead levels up to 12 times the permissible level,” according to an OSHA regional news release. For this particular case, more than 28 health violations resulted in proposed fines of $111,000, but others have faced more staggering costs for poor air filtration systems.
